On the 5th of June every year, individuals all over the world celebrate World Environment Day with the intention to spread awareness and foster actions towards protection of the environment. This year’s theme is tagged ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience’.
According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, wherein it stated that about 27% to 40% of the global land is degraded, and up to 600 million people are affected. Frequency and severity of droughts were 29% higher as compared to the year 2000 and if no measures are taken, drought may impact on more than three-quarter of the world’s population by 2050.
In the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), the important part is the restoration of the land. This process refers to the conservation and restoration of ecosystems globally, and this is a major drive towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
Millions across the globe are encouraged to engage in today’s World Environment Day.
A high-level policy event would be held in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, where United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Inger Andersen will deliver a keynote speech followed by a discussion on this year’s theme.
