The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a disappointing draw in the third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a qualification match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and drew 1-1 in Akwa Ibom State at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The match, played on June 7th, 2024, saw both teams share the spoils, leaving the Super Eagles under pressure to deliver in their upcoming matches.
Themba Zwane of South Africa opened the scoring in the 29th minute, putting Bafana Bafana ahead.
However, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru from Nigeria scored an equaliser in the last minute before halftime to bring the score 1-1 after his shot went to the edge of the post in the 46th minute.
The match concluded with no winner, putting the Super Eagles into a draw.

The team that sits in the top position of the group will qualify for the World Cup competition scheduled for 2026 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The following four teams will battle it out in another playoff round, whose winners will proceed to an intercontinental tournament. There, six teams will compete for the remaining spots in the World Cup.
Followingly, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be meeting Benin again in Abidjan on June 10 with the aim of changing the position of the group they are in.
