The Minister of Information, Mr Nape Nnauye, declared that Tanzania is making a moving towards space exploration with plans to develop the nation’s first-ever Space Agency in the 2024/2025 fiscal year. The government plans to proceed with the implementation of space programmes to develop satellite technology to ease access to communication and other services.

“The other services include defence and security, research, disaster management and weather forecasting in the country,” Nnauye told the national assembly. The country has been attempting to explore space programmes, including owning an orbital position 16W for use in broadcasting satellites and new frequencies that will be adopted to better the safety of air and maritime communications.
The government will also develop a national satellite management committee in the country in the following fiscal year to supervise and and establish space activities. In 2023, President Samoa Suluhu Hassan explained that Tanzania planned to develop its satellite and that discussions to reach the scientific milestone had already kick started.
“We are well prepared. We have started discussions, and rest assured that Tanzania will have its satellite shortly,” she explained.

Tanzania will join the likes of other space-faring East African nations, including Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, should the plan be fulfilled. This underscores a significant step for the East African country in its search for technological capabilities, contributing to her rising presence in space exploration.
