South Sudan’s general elections, the first since the country became independent in 2011, are scheduled for December 22, 2024. The presidential candidates include current president Salva Kiir Mayardit, Bol Gai Deng, and Deng Bol Aruei. The elections were originally planned for July 2015 but were delayed due to continuing conflict and a lack of a permanent constitution.
NEC Chair Abednego Akol addressed the media during a press conference after the commission’s meeting, stating that despite potential delays, it was essential to declare a date for the elections.
“This month, when it remains six months into elections, the elections date must be declared. That’s why we are declaring it today. By December 22nd to February 22nd, 2025, elections will be conducted here,” he said.
Abednego announced the formation of electoral committees for all ten states in the country on June 19, 2024, and appointed chairpersons to lead these state-level committees.

The NEC Chair, however, did not establish electoral committees for the three administrative areas of Abyei, Greater Pibor, and Ruweng, unlike the ten states.
In response to questions about the electoral committees for Abyei, Greater Pibor, and Ruweng, Abednego stated that the appointment of chairpersons for these administrative areas would be announced following a meeting of the National Elections Commission.
