The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) department declared a national disaster for areas affected by severe weather, in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Free State.
Bongani Elias Sithole, head of the national disaster management centre, revealed that disruptive rain, floods, strong winds and snow resulted in loss of lives, damage to property and the environment, destruction of infrastructure and interruption of essential services.

The provincial government stated that the damages are pegged at R 1.3 billion, with the eThekwini metro contributing over R 490 million.
Speaking at the National Disaster Operations Centre, the government stated that over 7000 households were impacted while approximately 20 schools were damaged, with roads, bridges, community halls and electricity installation also compromised.
