The Rwanda National Electoral Commission has announced the names of candidates vying for the country’s top seat and parliamentary positions in the upcoming elections scheduled for July 15th. The presidential race will see three candidates compete for the highest office, while over 500 aspirants will contest for seats in parliament.
The incumbent President, Paul Kagame has been at the helm of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) since 1998, seek to extend his 23-year tenure as president. Kagame has been a dominant force in Rwandan politics, winning previous elections in 2003, 2010, and 2017 with landslide victories, securing over 90% of the vote each time.
Challenging Kagame will be Frank Habineza, the leader of the opposition Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, and Philippe Mpayimana, an independent candidate. Habineza has previously contested the presidential election, garnering less than 2% of the vote.
Despite the daunting task ahead, Habineza remains optimistic about his chances, promising to bring about change and address the country’s pressing issues.
The National Electoral Commission received a total of nine presidential candidacies, but only three met the necessary requirements to proceed. Kagame’s main challengers face an uphill battle, as the incumbent president’s party, the RPF, has a strong grip on power and a significant following in the country.

Critics and human rights groups have long accused Kagame of ruling with an iron fist, suppressing dissent and free speech.
The political climate in Rwanda is often described as fearful, with opposition voices struggling to be heard. Despite these concerns, Kagame remains popular among many Rwandans, who credit him with maintaining stability and driving economic growth.
In a show of unity, the Liberal Party (PL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD) have endorsed Kagame’s candidacy, joining four smaller political parties already in a coalition with the RPF. This move has further solidified Kagame’s position, making his re-election seem almost certain.
As Rwandans prepare to cast their ballots, the international community will be watching closely, hoping for a peaceful and democratic process. The outcome of the election will have significant implications for Rwanda’s future, and the world is eager to see if the country will continue on its current path or embark on a new journey under fresh leadership.
