Rotary Cancer Event organizers have stated their intention to mobilize at least 3 Billion shillings for cancer causes in this year’s Rotary Cancer run.
Speaking on Friday, the patron of the Rotary Cancer Foundation, Stephen Mwanje said due to anticipation of constructing two Linear Accelerator bunkers at the Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya hospital, they planned to raise shs9 billion in the next four years.
“At Nsambya Rotary Cancer Centre, we can do chemotherapy and surgery, but unfortunately most of these cancers are stubborn and need radiotherapy yet most of our people can’t afford to fly abroad to do this. To ensure radiotherapy can be done here, we need to construct a centre of excellence for Cancer treatment in Uganda,” Mwanje said.

Currently, shs9 billion is needed to complete the two linear accelerator bunkers and commission the Cancer centre of excellence by 2027. At least, shs3 billion is needed to be raised each year from 2024 to 2027 to achieve this goal.
The Rotary Cancer Run began in 2012 and as pointed out by Mwanje, while previous proceeds from the run have among others included establishing a cancer centre at Nsambya hospital as well as a blood centre at Mengo hospital, the goal this year is a centre of excellence for cancer treatment.
He singled out Cancer as a threat that remains rampant in the country with 22,000 deaths recorded annually.
“These people die because they are diagnosed late. The earlier you know about your situation, the higher your chances of survival. This is for everybody. Every morning you can talk about cancer with your children when having breakfast, so that the awareness is championed, and the chances of survival increase.”
