The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has taken full responsibility for the disappointing performance of the Super Eagles, the nation’s senior men’s football team. In a meeting held on Thursday, the federation apologised to the Nigerian people for the team’s abysmal showings in recent matches, falling short of expectations.
The Super Eagles have struggled in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with lacklustre performances in four out of ten matches. This poor run of form has left fans and stakeholders disheartened, prompting the NFF to acknowledge the disappointment and vow to take concrete steps to address the issues.
The federation’s meeting, attended by President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Vice Presidents Felix Anyansi-Agwu and Gbenga Elegbeleye, and other members, was a demonstration of their commitment to getting the team back on track. The NFF recognised the need for expert guidance and announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser to support the coaching staff.
This move aims to inject fresh ideas and expertise into the team’s setup, enhancing their preparedness and competitiveness in upcoming tournaments. The federation is determined to leave no stone unturned in their quest to restore the Super Eagles to their former glory.
The body resolved that: “Further to (1) above, the Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
Still further to (1) above, the Committee resolved to beef up the NFF Technical Department with more qualitative hands. Equally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be re-jigged with immediate effect.
Notwithstanding the challenges that attended the team’s preparations for the Day 3 and Day 4 games of the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, owing to a 38-hour nationwide industrial action, the Board expressed displeasure with the poor attitude of some of the players to the National Assignment, and unanimously decided in favour of a more robust scouting programme of outstanding Nigerian-eligible players from across the four corners of the universe who can add tremendous value to the nation’s flagship team.
