Neville Mutsvangwa, the son of prominent Zanu PF politicians Christopher and Monica Mutsvangwa, will finally know his fate on Friday when the High Court rules on his bail appeal.
Mutsvangwa has been in jail for three weeks after being denied bail by a lower court on charges of trading in foreign currency.
Mutsvangwa’s appeal was initially heard by High Court Judge Esther Muremba who surprisingly recused herself from the case on the day she was expected to deliver her ruling.
Judge Muremba cited “personal reasons” for her decision, but reports suggest she was summoned to the State House, where she met with President Emerson Mnangagwa and Monica Mutsvangwa.
The case was subsequently reassigned to Justice Manyangadze, who has re-heard the appeal.
Mutsvangwa’s lawyer, Josephine Sande confirmed this new development. Mutsvangwa is jointly charged with Ellis Majachani and Simbarashe Tichingana on three counts which is for contravening the Exchange Control Act, the Bank Use Promotion and Suppression of Money Laundering Act, and the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act. He also faces a separate charge of breaching the Telecommunications Act.
The outcome of the appeal will determine whether Mutsvangwa will be granted bail or remain in custody pending his trial. The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused and the alleged involvement of top government officials.
