A Lassa fever survivor, Dr. Ernest Agbata has decried the situation in which numerous patients in the South East zone flock the virology centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State to receive Lassa fever treatment and called for the establishment of virology centres in all the States of the zone with a view to sparing the plight of those outside Ebonyi state.
The medical director of Agbata Memorial Hospital, Adani Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State, Dr. Agbata described Lassa fever as very rampant which has continued to claim many lives due to non diagnosis during the initial stage.
He spoke during a Lassa fever case management training which was held in Abakaliki by the state’s Ministry of Health, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization.
While speaking during the training, Dr. Agbata pointed out the necessity of properly sensitizing the health workers across the states of the federation so that they would be knowledgeable of the initial symptoms of the disease as well as the procedure for starting the treatment.
