Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been elected as the new Chairman of the South West Governors Forum.
The governor’s emergence as the new Chairman followed a meeting of the South West Governors Forum at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵. The election of Sanwo-Olu was unanimous, as all six governors present at the meeting supported his nomination.
During the meeting, the governors paid their last respects to the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, who until his death in December 2023, was the Chairman of the South West Governors Forum. The governors also congratulated the new Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
In the communiqué read by Sanwo-Olu after the meeting, the governors restated their call for state police and pledged their support for the Federal Government regarding the minimum wage tripartite committee. The governors also commended the Federal Government for the flag-off of the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and other initiatives. They called on the Federal Government to rehabilitate federal roads across the South West states.

The governors adopted “Ise Wa Fun Ile Wa” as the anthem for the South West states and condemned the agitation for the Yoruba nation.
In attendance at the meeting were Governors Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti).
Sanwo-Olu’s election as the Chairman of the South West Governors Forum comes after the death of former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, in December 2023.
The South West Governors Forum is the umbrella body of all six Governors in the geo-political zone.
