The medics and leaders in Kikuube District have called on the government to seek to post an eye specialist to as low as a health centre so that they can diagnose the cases and possibly refer where necessary.
This follows increasing eye problems, many of whom due to ignorance have resorted to herbs, use of urine as well as breast milk as remedies.
As a result of rising eye diseases, Itaza Foundation in collaboration with Mengo Hospital facilitated a health camp at Bujalya Primary School in Buhimba Sub-county.
Mugerwa noted that managing eyes is effortless, but the concern is ignorance, and people rarely bother to go for an eye check-up to the specialist before he prescribes certain medicine.
“While on sensitization, we also urge the government to assign an eye specialist to each of the health centre for early identification and referral of possible cases because eyes cannot be treated by anybody.”
The Buhaguzi East member of parliament, Stephen Aseera said the community is still backward to the extent of some using urine, and breast milk without considering the effects.
“You know that some people use urine, and if it is infected the eye dies completely; some other use breast milk,” contributed Aseera who advocated for the health camp.
“This is all ignorance. We are witnessing a number of people including children losing sight. It is all about sight management.”
In the four medical camps they have conducted, 89 patients have been diagnosed and operated, and their sights have been recovered and those with hardships in reading have been supported with reading and sunglasses.
He said he was fully aware it may not be the conventional duties of an MP, but he cannot be leading a sick congregation.
“Always visit the health centre for diagnosis before receiving treatment, so is with reading glasses, go get checked so that you are provided a service in accordance with tests.”
In the same health camp, those who lost legs received treatment and some were fitted with artificial legs to enable them to move around.
