Police from Kenya stand at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport after landing in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, June 25, 2024. A contingent of police officers from Kenya landed at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

The deployment of Kenyan police personnel comes in response to a pledge made by Kenya last July to lead an international force in Haiti, where gangs have wreaked havoc, controlling most of the capital city and perpetrating heinous crimes such as killings, kidnappings, and sexual violence. The situation has left over 580,000 people homeless, with many more living in constant fear.

The international community has acknowledged the dire need for intervention, and the arrival of Kenyan police marks a crucial step in efforts to restore peace and stability to Haiti. In a statement, U.S. President Joe Biden underscored the importance of this mission, emphasizing that “the people of Haiti deserve to feel safe in their homes, build better lives for their families, and enjoy democratic freedoms. Haiti’s future depends on the return to democratic governance.”

The Kenyan police contingent is expected to work closely with local authorities and other international partners to support the Haitian National Police in their efforts to combat gang violence and restore order. The mission aims to create a secure environment that will enable the Haitian people to rebuild their lives, revitalize their communities, and pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future.

As the situation in Haiti continues to unfold, the deployment of Kenyan police serves as a testament to the global commitment to supporting the Haitian people in their quest for peace, security, and democratic governance.
