On the final day of the Africa Athletics Senior Championships, Brian Komen clinched the fourth gold medal for Kenya after timing 3:33.95 in the men’s 1500m race in Douala, Cameroon. Immediately after the triumph came a silver-medal win by Djibouti’s Ayanleh Abdi Abdillahi, who finished with 3:36.24, while Kenya’s Boaz Kiprugut won bronze with 3:37.25.
Leah Jeruto added to Team Kenya’s medal count, bagging bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:36.33. Chekwemoi Loice, from Uganda, won gold in the event with 9:24.47, ahead of Ethiopian Alemnat Wale, who took silver with 9:35.19.
Another silver for Kenya came through Caroline Nyaga in the women’s 1500m in 4:06.76. The win was taken by Ethiopian Sharon Berhe in 4:06.05, with Ugandan Esther Chebet taking third place in 4:06.90.
These wins catapulted Kenya to the top of the medal table with 23 medals—including a haul of 10 gold—a performance unimaginable without the hard work and dedication of the athletes.
This achievement marks a repeat of their success in the previous championships held in Mauritius, where they also secured the top spot on the medal table.

The win in the men’s 1500m by Komen was one of the salient moments of the championships.
