The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) together with its partners during the event of the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health (AFSH) Summit launched the Fertilizer and Soil Health Hub in Nairobi, Kenya. The hub, which is focused on West Africa and the Sahel for better soil health, enhanced agricultural production and sustainable agriculture, aims to build capacity, influence policy as well as raise awareness.
Given the situation in the West African region and Sahel including low yields, loss of ecosystem services, decline in soil health, OFSP Africa hub will address existing gaps in understanding and management of soil systems, capacity development, knowledge management, fertilizer use, and agronomy.
The hub is a multi-stakeholder initiative supported by an implementation grant of over 10 million USD for more than five years from OCP Africa and additional funding from the AICCRA project of the World Bank for ECOWAS with regional technical partners. It will be based at IITA’s headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria, and have a hub at the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Ben Guerir, Morocco.
