The former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma denounced the country’s newly formed coalition government on Sunday, urging for new elections to be held. Zuma expressed his disapproval, stating that the current government does not truly represent the will of the people, and instead, he advocates for a fresh mandate to be given to the citizens to choose their leaders.
Speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg, Jacob Zuma, the former President of South Africa and current leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, addressed the media,
“There must be a repeat. No, There must be another elections,”
Following the May 29 elections, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, led by Jacob Zuma, secured 58 seats in the legislature, but has opted not to join the ruling coalition.
Zuma has maintained that his party will not engage in negotiations as long as Cyril Ramaphosa, his successor as President and leader of the African National Congress (ANC), remains at the helm. This stance is largely fueled by Zuma’s personal animosity towards Ramaphosa, who replaced him as President.
Jacob Zuma’s presidency ended in disgrace in 2018, as he was forced to resign amid a slew of corruption allegations, marking a dramatic downfall for the former president.
The former President addressed his party supporters, stating that due to a lack of faith in the South African judicial system’s ability to remain impartial, they would be taking their grievances to international courts, seeking a fairer hearing outside of the country’s borders.
“We are going to the international court…so that this country does not have the South African judges doing so,” he said.
