Finidi George Resigns as Super Eagles Head Coach Amidst NFF’s Plan to Appoint Foreign Technical Adviser

Finidi George has resigned from his position as head coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles. This follows the announcement by the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, for a foreign technical adviser to be appointed to take charge of the team’s technical affairs.

Finidi George was appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles earlier this year, signing a one-year contract with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). The contract included a performance-based clause, which would have allowed for an extension if he had achieved satisfactory results in the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying matches.

The result, all said, was largely mixed during George’s time as the Super Eagles’ head coach. He handled two of the 2026 World Cup qualifying series matches, where they played South Africa to a 1-1 draw and lost by 2 goals to 1 against Benin Republic. Yet his stint was brought to a rather premature end with the NFF opting to appoint a foreign technical adviser to the team.

Finidi George is a Nigerian professional football coach and former player of the Nigeria National Football Team. He played as a right-winger.

After making a significant impact at Ajax in the Netherlands, contributing to the team’s impressive haul of eight major titles, including the 1995 Champions League. He later played for Real Betis in Spain and had a brief stint in England before retiring from professional football.

The NFF is now left with a search for a likely replacement.
