Nigerian track and field star Favour Ofili has set her sights on the upcoming national Olympics trials after a stunning win in the women’s 100m at the New York Grand Prix. On Sunday, Ofili won ahead of an assembled stellar field, including Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, competing for Jamaica, in a superbly run race to once again convey great form and determination.
The 21-year-old Nigerian sprinter, who recently ran a windy 10.78 in Baton Rouge, showed why she is one of the great young, bright talents in Nigeria today by turning back a strong field to win the women’s 100 metres.
“Just like practice, stay calm and just go, finish your transition because that’s the issue, and whatever happens will happen. I wanted to get the standard here and I give God glory for the win,” Ofili told NBC Sports after the race.
“For the trials, stay calm and just do what I know how to do; go back and do some training before I go back home for the national trials.” She added.
The Olympic trials will take place in Benin City, Edo State, from June 16 to 18, and will serve as the selection process for Nigerian athletes competing in the Senior Africa Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon (June 21–28) and the Paris 2024 Olympics (July 26–August 11).

The Olympic trials, set to take place soon, will bring together the best athletes in Nigeria to fight for crucial slots in their national team. Ofili will be among the favourites vying for a place, with an exceptional current form and magnificent performance in these early months of the season. Her win in New York has further pushed her confidence to greater levels, and she will be looking to replicate this success at the trials.
Favour Ofili received an outpouring of accolades from fans on X (formerly Twitter), who took to the platform to celebrate her remarkable achievement and impressive display on the track.
