Nigerian athletic star Ese Brume has made a triumphant return to the top of the podium, clinching her fourth African women’s long jump title at the 2024 Africa Senior Athletics Championship in Cameroon.
Brume’s impressive display saw her leap to a distance of 6.73m in her final attempt, edging out Burkina Faso’s Marthe Koala who had led the competition with a jump of 6.72m.
This will be Brume’s remarkable comeback to the event she had won earlier in 2014, 2016, and 2018. It was pride of place for her dominion event, as Brume easily secured her fourth title. Though her jump was short of the 6.86m 2024 Olympics qualification standard, such a fine performance has already handed her a spot at the Paris Olympics through her ranking.

In the women’s high jump final, Temitope Adeshina won silver with a clearance of 1.84m, finishing behind Ghana’s Rose Yeboah who won gold with a height of 1.87m. Her performance was akin to winning the gold, considering that only two weeks ago she lost the NCAA Championships to the same Yeboah.
Esther Joseph, Nigeria’s new women’s 400m champion, won bronze in a time of 51.94s.
Samuel Ogazi also won bronze in the men’s 400m final in 45.47s. He finished third in a race won by Cheikh Tidiana Tiouf of Senegal in 45.23s while Lee Eppie of Botswana was second in 45.39s.
The new national champion, Dubem Amene was also in action and finished seventh in 46.27s.

Nigeria’s new women’s 400m champion, Esther Joseph also won bronze in a time of 51.94s.
South Africa’s Miranda Coetzee ran a gutsy race, taking the reins of the race early on to strike gold in 51.16s ahead of Qincy Malekani of Zambia, who got the silver in 51.56s.
