New Zambia-based agritech firm eMsika, which offers a farmer-centric digital marketplace and application for poultry farmers as well as physical shops, is set to move into four new markets shortly having received significant demand.
Launched in 2016 by Gilbert Mwale and Elton Chirwa, eMsika alternatives offer automated farm inputs like chicks, feed, and vaccines for the poultry and livestock farmers while offering on-farm visits through FarmHouse App.
“We identified a significant gap in the market for accessible and user-friendly digital solutions tailored specifically to smallholder poultry and livestock farmers,” Mwale said.
“While there are other agricultural technology companies in the market, FarmHouse distinguishes itself by focusing on providing comprehensive on-farm technical advice and quality farm inputs for the needs of smallholder poultry and livestock farmers in urban areas. ”

Through FarmHouse, farmers can obtain training, materials as well as connections to other producers. On the other hand, eMsika recently introduced a farmer membership platform known as Farmhouse Plus. However, it has also established its store, and got suppliers from multinational companies.
Currently, the app mostly has 2,000 downloads, and with online training has reached out to over 8,000 farmers. It has recently started operating and is searching for partners it expects to penetrate Tanzania, Nigeria, Egypt, and Zimbabwe in the next year, mainly ably through Poultry Manager.
eMsika is funded by equity investment, grants, and partnerships, and has received a total of US$150,000 in funding since inception and is currently seeking US$50,000 for its marketing, technology, and for one key hire.
“Farmhouse generates revenue through subscription fees for on-farm technical support and margins from sales. While we’re focused on scaling our user base, we’re also steadily growing our revenue streams,” Mwale said.
