Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, announced on Thursday in Luanda Province that the private entrepreneurs will drive the reform of the Angolan electricity sector.

This comes with the construction of the network infrastructure, the expansion of the transmission system lines, and interconnection with neighbouring countries.

Speaking at the presentation of the recommendations of the 4th Dialogue between the United States of America (USA) and Angola on Energy Security, he opined that the reforms will be funded by the Americans, with the view of bringing forth equally cheaper and more populist energy for the populace.

The official welcomed the resumed dialogue between the two countries, which had been cut off since 2016, and noted that this event takes place at a time when there is an enhancement of cooperation between Angola and the United States due to the visit of President João Lourenço to that country, where he met with President Joe Biden.

Besides this, he remembered, other initiatives and cooperative measures are also underway, for instance, the promotion of the Lobito corridor and construction of energy generation facilities using renewable energy resources.

As it has been stated by the minister, Angola, and the United States of America are keeping the dialogue on climate change, energy transition and the advancement being made towards presenting itself as a country with a low-carbon economy.

On his part, the US Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources, Geoffrey R. Pyatt affirmed that the United States will maintain their commitment to invest in the energy transition sustainably and in the model that Angola has set in the process of providing energy to the Southern region.

He also stressed that the USA will continue investing in photovoltaic and wind projects sustainable in the country, as well as investing in exploration of some crucial minerals to fuel both economies.

The Dialogue between Angola and the United States of America is an annual event that takes place in turn in Angola and the USA, attended by the ministries of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, and Energy and Water, aimed at exploring cooperation in energy security, transition, and decarbonization.
