The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, has bid a final farewell to John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu. The actor’s funeral took place in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria.
The burial ceremony is being attended by members of the Nigeria Actors Guild (AGN), along with family and other mourners.
The event marks the final farewell to the actor, who died on Saturday, March 2, 2024, in Lagos due to cardiac arrest, following complications from the amputation of one of his legs after a prolonged battle with diabetes.
Mr. Ibu’s journey to stardom began in 2004 with the film “Mr. Ibu,” which also starred the late Ita Iheme. Over his prolific career, he appeared in more than 200 Nollywood films, becoming a household name with hits such as ‘Mr. Ibu,’ ‘Mr. Ibu and His Son,’ ‘Coffin Producers,’ ‘Husband Suppliers,’ ‘International Players,’ ‘Mr. Ibu in London,’ and ‘Police Recruit.’
In October 2023, Mr. Ibu made a public plea for financial assistance to help with his medical expenses as he battled diabetes and other health issues. His appeal was met with an outpouring of support from his colleagues and well-wishers, who donated generously to help him cover his medical bills. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of his medical team and the support of his fans, he lost the battle. He is survived by his wife and three children.
The funeral rites for the late Nollywood actor began in Enugu, with a night of tribute held in his honour on Wednesday in Enugu State, with fellow actors Charles Anwurum and Victor Osuagwu among those who paid their last respects. The Actors Guild of Nigeria held a candlelight procession to pay tribute to him and other deceased actors at Unity Fountain in Abuja.
