The national rugby sevens team, under the head coach Tolbert Onyango, has released the final team to represent Uganda in Monaco at the Olympic Games Repechage. The World Rugby Sevens 2024 Repechage is scheduled to take place from June 21–23 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, France, providing a final opportunity for teams to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
The World Rugby Sevens Repechage, a three-day tournament organised by World Rugby, will bring together 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams to compete for the final remaining spots in the Paris Olympics, with one team from each gender securing a place in the Olympic Game.
The Ugandan team, grouped in Pool B, faces formidable opponents, including Great Britain, Canada, and China. Following a less-than-ideal performance at the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger Series in Munich, where they finished sixth, the team aims to rebound and secure a spot in the Paris Olympics.
Following this, some key players who were absent in the Munich fixture have returned. These include Ian Munyani, Adrian Kasito, Pius Ogena, and Timothy Kisiga.
Onyango, a former Kenyan international, made it clear that this last qualifier for the Olympics will be very tough. “But we know what to expect, and every match will be like a final for us,” added Onyango.
After a disappointing sixth-place finish at the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger Series in Munich, Onyango’s team is seeking redemption at the Repechage.

In the women’s category, China is the front-runner, but Hong Kong, Argentina, Kenya, and Uganda are also vying for the sole remaining Olympic spot.
