Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala is confident that the Super Falcons can overcome the odds to make a way past their group at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Randy Waldrum’s girls have been drawn into the dreaded Group C, whereby they will face off against world champions Spain, aside from Brazil and Japan.
The “group of death” tag appears not to burden Oshoala, as she draws inspiration from what the team went through at the 2023 World Cup. In an interview with FIFA, she said:
“At the World Cup last year, people said the same thing,” said Oshoala. “They said we were in the Group of Death with Australia, Canada and the Republic of Ireland and could not qualify. But we did. I have a lot of confidence in this team. We have many young players, and we can make things difficult for our opponents. We don’t just think about getting out of the group, I think we can actually walk away with a medal.”
Oshola states, saying that the Super Falcons have been practicing around the clock to hone their skills and teamwork. Oshoala says their hard work will indeed pay off.
“We have been bonding as a team, and our chemistry is growing stronger,” she said. “We fear no team. We’ll go out there and give it our heart and soul, and I’m sure we will get past the group stage.”
The Olympic Games will take place on July 26 and end on August 11, 2024.
