South African swimmer Lara van Niekerk has been forced to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympics due to injury. The 21-year-old breaststroker was considered a medal hopeful for Team SA, but a back injury has shattered her dreams of competing in her maiden Olympics.
Van Niekerk’s withdrawal was confirmed in an Instagram post, where she expressed her heartbreak and disappointment. “It breaks my heart to be missing out on the Paris Olympic Games, as 2024 was the Olympics I have worked for since being a little girl,” she wrote.
Despite qualifying for the Olympics on two separate occasions, Van Niekerk’s times were not recognised due to circumstances beyond her control. The young swimmer was determined to make a name for herself in the swimming world, but fate had other plans.
Van Niekerk’s injury acts as a significant blow to Team SA’s medal hopes, as she was considered one of the country’s strongest contenders in the pool. The South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC) had announced an eight-strong swimming squad for the Olympics, but Van Niekerk was not included due to her injury.
The swimming community has rallied around Van Niekerk, offering words of encouragement and support. Her teammates, including Olympic champion Tatjana Schoenmaker, will have to carry the torch for Team SA in the pool.
The young swimmer has vowed to return stronger and more determined than ever, but for now, she will have to watch the Olympics from the sidelines.
