In a recent ruling, the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) imposed a fine of N150 million on MultiChoice Nigeria and ordered the company to provide a one-month free subscription on DStv and GOtv. However, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced that it will appeal the ruling, stating that it disagrees with the decision.
The tribunal’s ruling came after an Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade, brought a suit against MultiChoice Nigeria, alleging that the company’s planned price increase for its DStv and GOtv packages was unfair and exploitative. The tribunal had previously ordered MultiChoice Nigeria to halt the price increase pending the determination of the suit, but the company disobeyed the order and went ahead with the price hike.
The order had restrained the pay-TV company from increasing its monthly subscription pending the determination of the suit brought before it by an Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade.
The tribunal also ordered the pay-TV company to provide its Nigerian customers with a one-month free subscription to its DStv and GOtv packages.
In a statement, MultiChoice reacted by saying that it disagreed with the ruling and would file an appeal against it.
The statement partly reads, “MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter.
“We disagree with the ruling and will therefore file an appeal against the said ruling.
“As the matter is currently sub-judice, we are restrained from making further comments.”
MultiChoice Nigeria is seeking to overturn a ruling that ordered the company to pay a fine and provide a free subscription to its customers. The ruling was made after a lawyer, Festus Onifade, filed a lawsuit alleging that the company’s price increase was unfair to consumers.

The company had been restrained from implementing the price increase pending the outcome of the lawsuit. MultiChoice Nigeria is now appealing the decision, hoping to have the fine waived and the ruling reversed.
