The Ghanaian boxing team’s dreams of competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been cut short. Dr. Ornella Sathoud, the team’s last hope, was defeated in the women’s round-16 bout at the World Boxing Qualifying Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.
The team’s failure to qualify is a significant setback for the sport in Ghana. Boxing has been a beloved sport in the country, with many talented boxers emerging over the years. The Olympic Games have been a prestigious platform for Ghanaian boxers to showcase their skills and compete against the best in the world.
Dr. Ornella Sathoud’s defeat was a unanimous 0-5 decision against Shierleidis Orozco of Colombia. Despite his valiant effort, Sathoud was unable to secure the win needed to qualify for the Olympics. Theophilus Allotey, another Ghanaian boxer, had earlier been eliminated from the competition.
The Ghanaian Boxing Federation had high hopes for the team, but unfortunately, they were unable to meet the qualification standards.
