The Seychelles National Alliance Party (SNAP) is set to announce its new interim leader, according to the party’s new chairman, Cyril Lau-Tee. This development comes after the Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS) terminated the membership of the party’s leader, Vincent Padayachy, on May 15.
The executive committee of SNAP had previously revoked Padayachy’s membership on April 15, citing over 10 violations of the party’s constitution, including disregarding the executive committee when making decisions. Despite this, Padayachy announced the suspension of Lau-Tee and Hermitte from their roles as chairman and secretary general, respectively, on April 24. However, the ECS has deemed any actions taken by Padayachy after April 15 as invalid.
According to Ernesto Lionnet, a member of the executive committee, the party’s decision to revoke Padayachy’s membership demonstrates its commitment to accountability and transparency. “We are a serious party that does not take too well to our leaders doing whatever they want,” Lionnet said.
With the matter now settled, SNAP is moving forward with plans to hold its convention at the end of this year to elect its presidential and vice presidential candidates. The party is also working to identify candidates for the National Assembly and ensure it has a complete executive committee.
Presidential and legislative elections in Seychelles are scheduled to take place on September 27, pending approval of a proposed 11th amendment to the Constitution on a fixed date for elections by the National Assembly.
