In a significant event marking 25 years of unbroken democracy and legislature in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu will address a joint sitting of the National Assembly (NASS) on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The Clerk to the National Assembly, Sani Tambawal, announced in a statement that the President will discuss the state of the nation and commission the NASS Library.
According to the statement, “This is to inform Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members that as part of the event to commemorate 25 years of unbroken democracy and legislature in Nigeria, there will be a joint sitting of both the Senate and the House of Representatives on Wednesday, 29 May 2024. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR will address the joint sitting on the state of the nation and also commission the National Assembly Library.”
Lawmakers are expected to be seated by 9:00 a.m. as the President delivers his address. This event holds significant importance as it marks President Tinubu’s first anniversary in office, having been sworn in on May 29, 2023.
The Tinubu administration has introduced several reforms aimed at revamping the economy, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange windows. However, these policies have been met with criticism from various quarters, including elder statesmen and organized labor groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The government’s handling of the economy has been a subject of controversy, with soaring inflation rates and a high cost of living crisis affecting many Nigerians. The President’s address to the National Assembly is expected to provide insight into his administration’s plans to address these challenges and chart a path forward for the nation’s economic growth and development.
As President Tinubu marks his first year in office, this address to the National Assembly comes at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history. The country is grappling with numerous challenges, including economic uncertainty, security concerns, and social unrest. The President’s leadership and policy decisions will play a significant role in shaping the nation’s future, and this address is an opportunity for him to reassure Nigerians of his commitment to addressing their concerns and working towards a better future for all.
