Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation, has stated that Nnamdi Kanu’s case is a challenging one, and only a court of competent jurisdiction can properly adjudicate the charges brought against the detained IPOB leader.
He stated that since the matter is already under judicial consideration, it’s best to let the legal process run its course and allow the court to render its decision.
Lateef Fagbemi made this statement during a question-and-answer session at the Sectoral Ministerial Briefing in Abuja on Friday, which marked the one-year anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
While pointing out that Kanu is being held in accordance with the Constitution, he observed that, “the matter is still in court, let’s wait for the court”.
The Attorney-General of the Federation highlighted a significant distinction between the legal cases of Nnamdi Kanu and Omoyele Sowore, the organizer of the #RevolutionNow protest, emphasizing that their circumstances are notably different.
As previously reported, Omoyele Sowore was arrested in 2019 and subsequently prosecuted for allegedly inciting violence and advocating for the forceful overthrow of the government during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The federal government withdrew its case in February, submitting a notice of discontinuance through the office of the Attorney-General.
