While facing a wave of criticism from the wealthy and opposition parties, President Cyril Ramaphosa has finally signed the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill into a law, thus giving a strong signal that the people in South Africa are equal in terms of the claiming of equal rights to the healthcare.
The act is part of the presidential motion passed 13 days before the general elections.
The President continues to be committed to the cause of fighting inequality in medical services, describing it as a matter of remedying an issue long overdue for the country.
Business groups, together with the opposition parties, among them the DA, have challenged the legality of the bill, accusing Ramaphosa of using the bill for political gain.
However, Economic Freedom Fighter, EFF’s Julius Malema has merely called the ANC’s version “pretentious”.
Nevertheless, the President is enthusiastic and willing to pass this bill, making sure that everyone in the country has access to fundamental healthcare services independently of their ability to afford it. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Union Buildings where the actors will sign the agreement.
