Muluwork, a 26-year-old woman from Jimma, Ethiopia, who hasn’t eaten food or drank water for the past 16 years, yet she remains healthy. According to locals, Muluwork has not eaten a single piece of food or sipped a drop of water for 16 years.
It is alleged that she has not eaten or drank anything since she was 10, and now she is 26 years old, making it 16 years.
Doctors in Zewditu Hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, confirmed after a series of tests that there are no particles of food remaining in her body. Likewise, some hospitals in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, agreed with Zewditu Hospital that there was no remnant of food particles in her body after conducting their tests.
According to Mr. Belachew, the man who discovered Muluwork’s condition and brought the story to the limelight, some years back in Addis Ababa, taxi drivers often told the story of a girl who never ate or drank. A story he found hard to believe, but in order to satisfy his curiosity, he traveled to Jimma and, after speaking with Muluwork, brought her to Addis Ababa to observe for himself if it was true. He also took her to hospitals for tests, including Zewditu Hospital, and observed her daily routine for three years before he could believe the story.
On how it all started, Muluwork said that when she was much younger, she would not eat breakfast before going to school, and if her parents asked, she would lie that she had eaten. Since she turned 10, she has never eaten any food or even taken a sip of water. Muluwork continued, “I am an orthodox Christian; I go to church; there is holy water I am supposed to drink in church, but I do not drink it.”
When asked if she would resume eating and drinking someday, she said, “I don’t think I will ever eat or drink again.” And about people eating when she is around, “I do not feel offended when people eat where I am; I make tea and coffee for my visits or family, yet I do not drink.“
When asked if she uses the bathroom, she said, “The only reason I have to go to the bathroom is that I have to wash my body; I have never used the toilet for the past 16 years.”
When she was pregnant with her daughter, the doctor kept injecting glycose for the baby to survive on, and when the baby was born, she couldn’t breastfeed her because her body couldn’t produce enough breast milk. After all, she did not eat or drink.
Doctors and everyone else are still wondering how her body generates enough energy for the amount of work she does, even as someone who doesn’t eat.
